Willingness to communicate in a multilingual context: part one, a time-serial study of developmental dynamics

In many contexts of multilingualism, language learners can initiate communication in the target (TL), or a contact (such as English). Patterns use emerging from these choices affect TL development. They also vary between individuals. Willingness to communicate (WTC) needs be investigated ways that capture variations. So far, WTC has not been studied multilingual contexts, using individual-level longitudinal designs. Employing single-case, time-serial design and focused on critical period growth, this study explores trajectories adult Swedish for whom English provide viable options community interaction. Change point moving window correlational analyses reveal operation mutually interacting influences shape have system-level effects. With light shed processes at developmental timescale, findings are discussed context choice, co-evolution, trait–state dichotomy.
